NEA - Retired
Intergenerational Teacher Mentoring Project
Check out the
website! |
| WHO? Sponsored by the National
Education Association - OSEA & OEA-R |
| |
| WHAT? The project is designed to
mobilize NEA-Retired teachers as mentors for NEA Student prospective
teachers and those new to the profession. A teacher-mentor can provide
support, guidance, and advice to help less experienced teachers become
effective in the classroom. The goal of the project is to help ensure
the professional success and retention of promising new teachers so
there will be a sufficient number of qualified and dedicated teachers
in our public schools. |
| |
| Why? There is a serious teacher
shortage in the United States. Fewer college students choose to go
into teaching that even a decade ago and more than half of all
beginning teachers leave the profession within three years. |
| |
| What can a Mentor Do? A mentor
can help a prospective teacher get through those rough moments and
challenging situations that all teachers face; help a prospective
teacher develop the awareness and skills to address the many
requirements of the profession (classroom management, parent
conferences); and enhance the prospective teacher's desire and
eagerness to teach. This is achieved through regular communication
between mentor and protégé and the development of a trusting
relationship. |
